I find it so much easier with Akeeba and working on wamp. I backup after every update, if things go wrong and just create a new folder in wamps \www folder. Then A.N.G.I.E (the installer packed in the jpa backup) does the rest.

I append 01, 02 etc. on the end of the file name (and corresponding database) as I have been known to go into double figures when things go wrong :-[
Especially when going from a very old version of J3 to J5 as I need to change the php and/or mysql versions.
